HappyWisdom - Episode 2 - Movies, Teen Age Not So Crazy, and Go Hawks!

_____________HW Episode 2_________________________

HW Section I  - Entertainment

Movies make me happy. I retain a sense of awe when I watch them, similar to Jason Silva, who called the movie theater his last place he could get such an experience, at least for now.

The actors don't so look happy, but seeing this trailer makes me happy.  Its amazing that they can make the Hulk and the god Thor look vulnerable somehow.

Escaping into a good movie - that's a HW technique for certain.

HW Section II - Science

From the science desk, here's one that might make parents and teens a bit happier.  Teen's aren't as crazy as we might give them credit for

  • Neuromyth #1:   Humans only use 10 percent of their brains.
  • Neuromyth #2:   Eating sugary snacks results in hyperactivity and reduced focus and attention.
  • Neuromyth #3:   Hemispheric dominance (whether you are “left-brained” or “right-brained”) determines how you learn.
  • Neuromyth #4:Teenagers lack the ability to control their impulses in the classroom.

HW Take away:  Science is reality, and that's okay sometimes.... :)

HW Section III  - Sports

Finally, as you know my adopted home town, Seattle, is once again in the hunt for the Super Bowl Championship.  This is a BIG deal here, since we don't have an NBA team, and, well, our baseball team is the Mariners.  'Nuff said.

To celebrate, I'm highlighting a quote from the hysterical column by  .

"His feet don't touch the any players because halfway through that jump, he ascended into a higher plane of existence. He's now the divine Kam Chancellor. He ran into that jump the same way a DeLorean by a mad scientist goes back into the past. That's not the same Kam Chancellor who jumped and disrupted the kicker. He went back in time, found that kicker's great grandfather in a soccer field somewhere and destroyed him before coming back to put fear into his great grandson. They don't mention Kam's name in that kicker's household the same way Hogwarts schoolchildren don't say Voldemort"

HW Moment: Sports give you a chance to root for your city, to all wear the same colors and be one on a national stage.   Its also a good idea to have more than one favorite team (see the Steelers).

Either way, Sports Fandom is definitely a HW approved behavior, as long as it really makes you happy (I've seen people rage...not pretty)

Go HAWKS!

How to Deal with Office Darwinism

What is it with New Yorkers and Seattle? First they blasted us out of our coffee-induced happy-place with a piece on how everyone west of Interstate 5 will be cast into the Pacific Ocean by a massive, continent changing earthquake, putting the odds at 33% that it'd happen within fifty years. Now we have this this one on Amazon   and how they've built a modern day Hunger Games workplace. You see, it is well known in the Seattle area that Amazon does not consider work-life balance or anything remotely like that. Everyone in the area knows this, because we all know a friend or a spouse that worked or used to work there.   Its not a sweatshop, but its close.   Most people know this going on an interview there know this.  They figure they'll stay four years until they vest and they get out.  If they survive the infighting and bullying, that is. But I have to admit it - I had no idea how bad it really was.  If half the things in this article are true it's th...

How Can We Be Happy in Today's World?

Its a tough world we live in.  Tough not necessarily in worldly goods, but in the general sense of security I must believe the early 21st century isn't doing so well.  I am of course talking about the shootings in my own country, and the repeated terror attacks, with scores of people horribly murdered. That this world is full of darkness and that mankind can be horrible to itself is not new information, but we seem to be so much more aware of it these days.   Fear, as I covered in my first Sway presentation , is not conducive to goal creation or the pursuit of dreams.  Getting your dreams accomplished isn't super high on the list when you're existentially afraid for your country, your kids, yourself.  These trying times take us down Maslow's Hierarchy , and it is well known that we make poor decisions when operating in a place of fear.   Should we pursue our dreams when faced with such a world?  I think we have to, because this...
