HappyFinds for Week 1 of 2015 - Topic: Really Cool Old Things including Graves and Tombs

Greetings all,
Last year I announced that I was going to fight the tide of negativity by posting postivie things. It should be fun and I hope to keep a weekly schedule.I love old things, which is why my recent trip to London was totally awesome, but for Americans this is old. They actually dug this newspaper from the 1700's up...and its totally readable. I wanted to read it!   I went to Boston and visited the graves there...wonderfully creepy tombs that were above ground.

Recently I read about Dolmen, which are really old above ground graves... or at least people think that's what they were.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolmen

"It remains unclear when, why, and by whom the earliest dolmens were made. The oldest known dolmens are in Western Europe, where they were set in place around 7000 years ago. Archaeologists still do not know who erected these dolmens, which makes it difficult to know why they did it. They are generally all regarded as tombs or burial chambers, despite the absence of clear evidence for this"

HW isn't about just disconnected happines...butterflies and kittens..no, its about uncovering happiness from the sad, salvaging something from the muck and mudd of life.   So on that note, I must mention one of my favorite announcer and his recent passing,  Stuart Scott, the ESPN announcer and seemingly fine fellow.  My HW from this is as follows: This poor man died at 49, and that is very very young.  When I start complaining about growing older I'll remember this man and many, many others who weren't lucky enough to get another birthday here on earth.  The message for me - be exceedingly grateful for every moment you get on earth, even if you believe there's going to be something after ( which I do :) )

That brings me to Jason Silva.  I'm a fan, but man he really needs to read some C.S. Lewis ( probably has, but needs to read it again).   Check out his video, which starts with the amazing quote below. Like most things with Silva, I love where he's coming from but we don't end up int eh same place pretty often.   Nevertheless, respect !

How to Deal with Office Darwinism

What is it with New Yorkers and Seattle? First they blasted us out of our coffee-induced happy-place with a piece on how everyone west of Interstate 5 will be cast into the Pacific Ocean by a massive, continent changing earthquake, putting the odds at 33% that it'd happen within fifty years. Now we have this this one on Amazon   and how they've built a modern day Hunger Games workplace. You see, it is well known in the Seattle area that Amazon does not consider work-life balance or anything remotely like that. Everyone in the area knows this, because we all know a friend or a spouse that worked or used to work there.   Its not a sweatshop, but its close.   Most people know this going on an interview there know this.  They figure they'll stay four years until they vest and they get out.  If they survive the infighting and bullying, that is. But I have to admit it - I had no idea how bad it really was.  If half the things in this article are true it's th...

How Can We Be Happy in Today's World?

Its a tough world we live in.  Tough not necessarily in worldly goods, but in the general sense of security I must believe the early 21st century isn't doing so well.  I am of course talking about the shootings in my own country, and the repeated terror attacks, with scores of people horribly murdered. That this world is full of darkness and that mankind can be horrible to itself is not new information, but we seem to be so much more aware of it these days.   Fear, as I covered in my first Sway presentation , is not conducive to goal creation or the pursuit of dreams.  Getting your dreams accomplished isn't super high on the list when you're existentially afraid for your country, your kids, yourself.  These trying times take us down Maslow's Hierarchy , and it is well known that we make poor decisions when operating in a place of fear.   Should we pursue our dreams when faced with such a world?  I think we have to, because this...
